Are silk or mink eyelash extensions better?
One of the questions we’re asked here regularly at EMEDA Lash about eyelash extensions is about the difference between silk and faux mink eyelash extensions. Using all these materials, we’re very familiar with the difference, pros and cons of different kinds, and why you might choose one over the others. Here’s a little rundown on each type, the pros and cons, and who they are most suitable for, to help you choose your next set of lash extensions!

What is Mink Eyelash Extensions?

When we talk about mink eyelash extensions, we normally mean Faux mink eyelash extension.

We use faux-mink lashes, which are man-made fibres, designed to imitate real mink fur. They are very fine, soft and silky, just like real fur. However, they have been improved, in that if you wet them, they won’t lose their curl. When wet, real mink fur lashes become straight and wispy and you often need to use a curler to curl them back up.

Faux-mink lashes are becoming very popular because they are so light and fine, they feel exactly like your own lashes. They are also shinier in texture than the silk lashes, giving the lashes a glossy look. They are (with proper care!) very long lasting, and are great if your own lashes are fine and weak. Because they are so light, they don’t tend to drop or twist, even after many weeks of wear. Because they are so fine, the surface-area-ratio between your own lash and the extension is much closer to 1:1 (with synthetic it can be 1:2 or even higher) so they last longer.

It takes a longer time (around 1.5-2 hours) to apply a set of mink lashes because we use very fine fibres and we tend to apply more. One downside is that even with a lot of volume, they are still beautifully natural and fluffy looking, so those that want a really glamorous/made up “Kardashian” look are better off going for synthetic lashes which give even more volume.

What is Silk Lash Extension?

Silk lash are the mid-weight type of lash extensions, and are finer and more flexible than the synthetic type. Because they are softer and more porous, they tend to hold on slightly longer than the synthetic ones.

They can be made to look very natural or very glamorous, but sometimes quite as dense/thick as the synthetic lashes. Because they are lighter weight, they are often a much better option for your lashes if your own ones are weak or fine. They definitely last longer than synthetic lashes too.

Glamour sets of silk lashes are one of the most popular options for brides, who are looking for lashes that are full and long yet still natural looking.

Choosing between silk and faux mink eyelash extensions involves considering factors like appearance, comfort, durability, and cost. Here’s a breakdown to help you make an informed decision:

Which kind of Glue suit for Lash extension?

For lash extensions, it's important to use a high-quality adhesive designed specifically for this purpose. Here are some key features to look for in lash extension glue:

1. Medical-Grade: Opt for medical-grade adhesives, as they are formulated to be safe for use around the eyes and have strong bonding properties.

2. Quick Drying Time: Many lash extension adhesives have a fast drying time, usually between 1 to 3 seconds. This helps speed up the application process and ensures the lashes adhere securely.

3. Flexibility: A good lash extension glue should be flexible once dried, allowing for natural movement without causing the extensions to break or lift.

4. Low Fume: Look for glues with low fumes to minimize irritation to the eyes and surrounding skin. This is especially important for clients who are sensitive or have allergies.

5. Longevity: The adhesive should be durable, providing a long-lasting bond that can withstand daily activities, including showering and sweating.

6. Color: Most lash adhesives are black or clear. Black adhesives blend seamlessly with dark lashes, while clear adhesives are less noticeable and work well for lighter-colored lashes.

Always ensure the adhesive is compatible with the type of lash extensions you're using (e.g., synthetic, silk, mink) and follow all safety guidelines for application and removal. It’s also a good practice to perform a patch test to check for any allergic reactions or sensitivities.

How long will the lash extension lasting?

Lash extensions can last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on various factors:

1. Natural Lash Growth Cycle: Lash extensions adhere to your natural lashes, so they typically last as long as the natural lashes do. Since natural lashes have a growth cycle of about 6 to 8 weeks, extensions will generally last as long as it takes for your natural lashes to shed and regrow.

2. Type of Glue: High-quality, professional-grade adhesives can contribute to a longer-lasting bond. However, even the best glue will be affected by the natural growth cycle of your lashes.

3. Application Technique: Proper application by a skilled technician ensures that extensions are applied correctly and last longer. This includes isolating individual natural lashes and using the right amount of adhesive.

4. Aftercare: Following aftercare instructions is crucial. Avoiding excessive moisture, oils, or rubbing your eyes, and gently cleaning the extensions can help them last longer.

5. Lifestyle and Habits: Activities like swimming, sweating, or frequent use of oily products around the eyes can affect the longevity of lash extensions. Regular touch-ups or refills can help maintain the look as natural lashes shed and new ones grow in.

So How to choose them?

For a Dramatic Look: Silk extensions may be a better choice due to their darker, more glossy appearance.

For a Natural Look: Faux mink extensions are often preferred for their softer, more natural appearance and better flexibility.

Both options offer unique benefits, so your choice should align with your desired look, comfort preferences, and budget.
